Software Review – Wondershare Data Recovery for Mac

Among Mac data recovery products Wondershare is a well-known name. Mac Data Recovery software from Wondershare lets users non-destructively retrieve deleted/formatted/lost data from Mac hard drives, memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras and camcorders. It offers tons of options to regain different types of files that have gone missing owing to accidental deletion, unplanned formatting, virus infection, hard drive failure, partitioning errors, OS reinstall, etc. A majority of its users hail it as one of the safest Mac data recovery products currently available.

Generally, a backup is the first place users look to in order to restore lost files. This software comes in handy in situations where users either don’t have proper backups to restore their data from or if their backups have been destroyed/corrupted. Both technical as well as home users can make use of this software without much difficulty thanks to its simple user interface.

Some of the best features of Wondershare Data Recovery for Mac include:

  • Supports file recovery from NTFS, FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT file systems
  • Easily recovers various formats of document, image, video, audio, email, and archive files
  • Offers Quick Scan and Deep Scan alternatives
  • Allows file preview before recovery
  • Provides RAW Recovery option from severely corrupted devices
  • Partition Recovery supported
  • Restores permanently deleted data

The product is compatible with many macOS versions including Sierra 10.12, El Capitan 10.11, Yosemite 10.10, Mavericks 10.9, Mountain Lion 10.8, Lion 10.7, and Snow Leopard 10.6. It is easy to download and installs in a couple of seconds.

Lost File Recovery

The software claims to be backed by advanced scanning algorithms which help find every missing byte of data on your storage device and perform accurate restoration of deleted, formatted or even damaged files within minutes.

To test how much water these claims hold, we permanently deleted a few photos, audios, videos and documents from our test Mac and attempted their recovery using this product. The software was also used to scan a reformatted drive to see if it could perform as promised. Here’s what we found.

  • Lost Image Files

The software impressed us as far as recovering accidentally deleted image files was concerned. It correctly pulled up lost photos of different formats like JPG, PNG, BMP, etc within a considerably small amount of time. Though our test set involved just a few images (35 to be precise), the software took some time to scan the drive and perform recovery which was a bit of a disappointment. Thus, we gave the software a score of 97% in this area.

  • Lost Document Files

Our deleted documents test set included 5 Word documents, some Excel sheets, 2 PDFs, and a couple of Text files. Here too, recovery rates were great and the files were recovered with no modification to original data. Most original file names were also preserved. 98% results here.

  • Lost Audio & Video Files

Surprisingly, in the case of multimedia files too, the software’s success rate was quite good as compared to other similar products. Our deleted MP3, WAV, MP4, MKV, and WMV files were recovered successfully and a majority of them were intact with an exception of 2 files. But then, considering how other similar software had performed with respect to multimedia file recovery, we were more than happy to overlook the little glitch. We gave the software a score of 99% in this area.

  • Reformatted Drive Recovery

Note: The drive we reformatted had only our test data which wasn’t much. But then too, the speed of the software wasn’t overly impressive. We believe with larger amounts of data the scan and recovery speeds would be painfully slow.

    • The software recovered almost all lost image files successfully – 90% results
    • Document recovery was fair – 85% results
    • Slightly lower multimedia recovery results – 80% results

Advanced Features

Wondershare Data Recovery for Mac is equipped with many advanced features.

  • Resume Recovery Session – Through this feature the software allows users to save their recovery session on the hard drive and then resume it from where they left off at a later time. This enables users to pause a running recovery or save recovery at the point where drive scan has been completed. That way, to perform another recovery the drive doesn’t need to be scanned again.

  • Selective File Recovery – To hasten the recovery process, users can instruct Wondershare Mac Data Recovery to scan the hard drive for only certain types of data. We successfully selected which kind of files to recover – Images, Audio, Video, Documents, Archives, etc. But the software didn’t let us select from different file formats.

  • RAW Recovery – This feature was at par with the RAW recovery feature offered by other products. In case the standard recovery procedure offered by Wondershare isn’t able to recover the files you’re looking for, using this advanced RAW Recovery option you can perform a ‘deep’ scan of corrupted / severely damaged hard drives to try and recover lost files. You can choose whether to scan all data on the drive (this has chances of retrieving more files but also takes more time), or only scan deleted data on the drive.

  • Partition Recovery – If you’ve ended up losing critical files due to incorrect partitioning operations such as updating partitions with wrong size, accidentally formatting / deleting partitions, interrupted partition resizing, etc using Wondershare’s Partition Recovery feature, you can safely recover lost partitions and all data on them within a few clicks. It even lets you select the file system of the partition you’re scanning in order to eliminate the need of identifying the file system and thus, quickens the process.

Ease of Use

Wondershare Data Recovery scored a few plus points with respect to ease of use. The number of steps to be followed to recover lost data isn’t too much. Also, there are many options to customize the recovery process as per requirement (like selecting only particular types of data for recovery, saving / resuming recovery session, etc)

However, there is a negative here too. The software’s interface has room for improvement. It isn’t as user-friendly as that of other products in its league.

Working Speed & Ease on System Resources

Wondershare’s working speed was its weakest area. Its speed was measured on two parameters:

  • Hard Drive Scanning Speed
  • Data Recovery Speed

In both cases, the software failed to impress. The amount of data we gave it to scan was purely for test purpose (meaning it wasn’t much). Even so, the software took a lot of time to complete the scan. Recovery speed was quite low too. Considering its speed with dummy data, in a real scenario where GBs of data would be involved, the software’s scanning speed would be painfully slow lying within the range of 40 to 45 GB per hour.

Downloading the demo version of the software took under 5 seconds and installing it was smooth too. It didn’t need much RAM (1 GB minimum) or hard drive space (100 MB minimum free). Considering the time it took for scanning, we expected the software to cause other applications to hang. But it didn’t. We could switch between windows and continue working with Word without much trouble.

Help & Support

As far as getting in touch with Wondershare is concerned, the product fared average. Their website states that they support live chat but we couldn’t find a Live Chat window on their website. There’s no dedicated phone line to answer customer queries, however they do have quite an interesting support page. It needs you to answer a couple of questions about your query and then they apparently direct you to an appropriate support team.

There is also a lot of reading material related to Wondershare Data Recovery for Mac that can be easily found on a dedicated FAQ section and Program Manual section on their website.

8.5 Total Score

Overall Wondershare is a good product for data recovery on Mac. It has great recovery rates and isn't overly expensive. However, it doesn't offer exceptional speed or user-friendliness.
